JpGU Declaration Towards Contributing to SDGs

JpGU Declaration Towards Contributing to SDGs

The United Nations Publication, “Transforming our World: The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development,” (2015) expresses the UN determination to transform our world for the sake of human freedom and well-being. Achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) requires a deep understanding of the Earth and human society. To this end, the Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) is committed to providing society with fundamental and cutting-edge knowledge on a wide range of phenomena occurring in the areas affected by human activities, from the Earth’s interior to its surface, oceans, atmosphere, outer space, and planets[1]. This includes issues closely related to society, such as global environmental change and natural disasters[2]. In addition, in order for JpGU itself to develop activities in line with the spirit of the SDGs, we will review and be conscious of how our research and educational activities in each field of Earth and planetary science are related to the SDGs, visualize the relationship between our academic activities and the SDGs, and share this information not only with the members of JpGU but also widely with the general public[3]. Furthermore, JpGU will contribute to the realization of the SDG philosophy of leaving no one behind on Earth through research and education taking advantage of our conducting many international joint research projects, both with developed or developing countries. JpGU will also redefine its role to include operating as a fundamental communication platform in Japan towards connecting Earth and planetary science and the SDGs. To this end, JpGU will encourage members to engage in frank and earnest discussions and planning leading to activities that contribute to the achievement of the SDGs through its science sections and committees[4]. JpGU will also promote activities to contribute to the SDGs through exchanges with the Earth and planetary science communities outside of Japan, as well as with other academic, private, and governmental organizations in Japan and abroad that share the same ideals[5].
