Toward Open and Sustainable JpGU Meetings

The JpGU Meeting, held during the week of May each year, is open to participants from about 50 countries around the world and to the general public on Sunday to discuss cutting-edge results in science to solve global problems that affect our lives, such as climate change, natural disasters, ecosystems, resources, and space weather, and the science that provides the foundation to achieve the SDGs. In addition to the ongoing international collaboration among European, American, and Taiwanese earth and planet related societies (AGU, AOGS, EGU, CGU), from 2023 we have signed collaboration agreements with societies in related fields in Southeast Asian countries (8 societies in Indonesia, Philippines, and Malaysia) to start two-way cooperation and establish a framework for discussion of the SDGs. The SDGs are also a subject of the annual poster session for high school students. These high school students meet and discuss research results with experts, finding opportunities to spark interest, and open the door to the Earth and planetary sciences of tomorrow. Sessions whose proposals go beyond gender and career steps and are international in scope are marked with a diversity logo in the program description. We have taken environmental considerations into account in the running of the meetings, and for the 2023 Meetings we have acquired a Green Certificate of Electricity.
