#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2024-2026)

The Paris Olympics are in full swing and gathering the attention of the world—an international festival celebrating the sporting achievements of men and women from more than 200 different countries. As well as the super stars like Simone Biles in gymnastics and Novak Djokovic in tennis there are thousands of other participants from all corners of the world each with their own stories to tell. Larger, richer countries figure most prominently but we can all share the joy of a first medal—and a gold medal—for the Caribbean Island of St Lucia which has a population of less than 200 thousand. Japan has strengths in sports such as judo, wrestling and gymnastics. My own home country competing as Great Britain has multiple medals in cycling, rowing, and horse riding—as a friend liked to point out to me, all sports done sitting down!
Each Olympics has its own characteristics and legacy. the Paris Olympics has achieved the important milestone of having equal numbers of men and women competitors. This compares starkly with the first games to allow women participation in 1900 where only 2 % of the athletes were female! Many mixed gender events were introduced at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 and these continue to be popular. Female and male athletes working together for a common aim is one of the best ways to promote gender equality. It’s just more fun together! A second draw of the Paris games has been the inclusion of new sports that are popular with the younger generation: breaking, competition climbing, skate boarding. Young competitors in breaking can now stand on the Olympic podium for doing something that only a few decades ago you had to go to the streets of New York to witness.
Diversity, gender equality, and nurturing the next generation are all themes that are important to developing any major organization including our own JpGU. I think the innovations in Paris are a great example of how diversifying can strengthen an organization. We have begun concrete preparations for JpGU 2025 and setting the framework for the joint meeting in 2026 with AGU. There are no plans for any skateboarding but drawing on some of the Paris Olympic spirit can help us expand, move forwards and continue to improve the meeting for all.

Update of global maps of Alisov’s climate classification.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00547-1
Alisov’s climate classification is one of several proposed ones and relies on a definition based on circulation processes and may be used as a foundation for explaining global climate types. In this study, we attempt to improve Alisov’s climate divisions by examining objective analysis data using a machine learning technique. The resulting classification shows a physically interpretable distribution, demonstrating that the scheme used in this study contributes sufficiently to enhance the scientific understanding of climate formation.

@ Hiroto Kajita, Tsutomu Nakazawa, Masayuki Utsunomiya et al.;
Long-chain alkenones in the Shimosa Group reveal palaeotemperatures of the Pleistocene interglacial Palaeo-Tokyo Bays.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-022-00499-y
This study extracted long-chain alkenones (LCAs) from the core GS-UR-1 penetrating the Shimosa Group, Middle- to Late-Pleistocene sedimentary succession, to Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 11. The alkenone unsaturation ratio appears to reflect the SST of the Palaeo-Tokyo Bay formed during the peaks of MISs 5e, 7e, 9, and 11. The palaeo-SSTs during each interglacial period were 2–3 °C higher than the pre-industrial levels of Tokyo Bay and seemed to reach a level similar to that of the Holocene thermal maximum. This study demonstrate that the LCA-based proxy, has strong potential to provide palaeoceanographic and stratigraphic information.
