#1. Foreword by Yukihiro Takahashi, President of JpGU

I recently attended the 20th Annual Meeting of the AOGS (Asia Oceania
Geosciences Society) held in Singapore. The number of participants
exceeded 3,000, the highest ever for an event held in Singapore. It
was very impressive to see many researchers from all over the world,
including China, Taiwan, Korea, India, Australia, and Japan, as well
as ASEAN member countries, Europe, and the United States, engaging
in heated discussions.

This is a little off topic, but according to the IMD “World
Competitiveness Ranking 2023,” Japan’s international competitiveness
ranks 35th in the world. Considering that it was ranked first in the
first four years from 1989, and ranked in the top five until 1996,
its decline is obvious. The semiconductor industry, which once held
more than half of the world share, has fallen to 10%, and it is said
that advanced logic semiconductors are nine generations or ten years
behind the world’s leading edge. In academic research as well, not
only the world rankings of universities, but also many indicators
such as the number of published papers and the number of citations
have continued to decline since peaking in the early 2000s. It has
become an extremely rare country where there are almost no such
countries, including developed countries and developing countries.

Taiwan and Korea are the top runners in semiconductor manufacturing
technology, especially microfabrication technology for advanced logic
semiconductors, and China is overwhelmingly the manufacturer of multi-
copter drones. In the field of earth and planetary science journals,
some Japanese journals, such as PEPS, have achieved notable successes
in the world. On the other hand, in remote sensing, which is one of
the important related fields of earth and planetary science, the
impact factor of journals in that field is increasing rapidly, and
several journals are ranked in 5 to >10, which is led by China.
In terms of economic scale, the developing countries in Asia, which
are currently one tenth of Japan’s, are expected to be the same level
of Japan in 30 years if they continue present high economic growth.
At that time, the developing countries of Asia, which are just
beginning their academic research journey, may become world leaders,
at least in some fields. While imagining that time, we would like to
think about what Japan can do for those countries and communities now.

#6. Early Career and Student Community Support Survey

Students and Early Career Professionals in the Geosciences: Take Our
Survey (open till 31 December 2023)

One of the Task teams of the Global Geoscience Societies, of which
JpGU is a voluntary member, is the “Support Early Career and Student
Communities (ECS)” Task Team and has garnered support from 13
geoscience societies in formulation of this survey (enter from QR
code/URL). It will take only 10 minutes to complete. This survey will
remain open through December 2023. The purpose is to help societies
understand the career aspirations or challenges for students and
early career professionals interested in Earth and Space Science.
Once the responses have been collected, they will be shared amongst
the global geosciences societies to help them develop programs,
resources, and tools to ensure ECS can be prepared or excel in
their profession. Your cooperation will be greatly appreciated.
