Now
we’re accepting candidates or recommendation for
Representatives’ Election of Japan Geoscience Union
Corporation.

We
eagerly ask you to run for the election or recommend someone
appropriate for the position.

(1) 3 areas in Japan were designated as Global Geoparks!

Lake Toya and Mt. Usu (Usu volcano and hot springs),
southern Hokkaido, Itoigawa (Itoigawa-Shizuoka tectonic line
and jades), central Honshu and Shimabara Peninsula (active
volcanoes and hot springs), northern Kyushu were designated
as Global Geoparks at the Global Geopoark Network Member
Committee Meeting held in Taian, China on August 22, 2009.

From Committees


(1) Japan International
Geography Olympiad Committee

Asia Oceania Geography Olympiad was held from August 2 to 6
at University of Tsukuba in Japan.
15 high school students from 4 countries, Australia, Taiwan,
Mexico and Japan, participated in this competition.
They challenged written, multimedia and field work tests.

 

<Results>
Japan: Gold Medal 1 (Yuta Ikeda / Senior High School at
Komaba, University of Tsukuba
Bronze Medal 1 (Yotaro Katayama / Kaisei Senior High School)
Australia: Silver Medal 2
Mexico: Bronze Medal 2
Taiwan: Bronze Medal 1


Team Japan did a great job!

On Field Work
test, one team consisted of 4 members from one from each
country.

High school
students from Mito 1st Senior High School and Takezono High
School supported this competition voluntarily.

International
Geography Olympiad is to be held in Taiwan in 2010.

(2) Japan Earth
Science Olympiad Committee

Camp training was conducted for 4 Japan team high school
students at Kanagawa Prefectural Museum of Natural History
from August 19 to 22.
We’re looking forward to their success in International
Earth Science Olympiad held in Taiwan from September 14 to
22, 2009.
Japan Earth Science Olympiad Committee Board has decided to
start preparing for “2012 International Earth Science
Olympiad in Japan.”
Your understanding and cooperation would be greatly
appreciated.
