=====================================================================

#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU

After the challenges of the Covid pandemic in 2020 and 2021, the JpGU annual meeting has shown continuous growth. This year, with the added momentum from our partnership with AGU, we are expecting over 10,000 participants. Of course, larger isn’t always better, but scale creates new possibilities, particularly for interdisciplinary collaboration and expanding international networks.

I would like to take this opportunity to reach out specifically to our Early Career Scientists (ECS). As a young scientist, it can be difficult to concentrate on much more than your own presentation or your specific session. While those are important, meetings are about so much more. Building a network is one of the most beneficial parts of such events.

To support this, our meeting includes both social and academic events designed to bridge narrow disciplines, with a particular focus on our ECS. The Plenary Lectures (Monday–Thursday lunchtimes, all in Convention Hall A) are hour-long presentations which aim to inspire and connect:

– Monday, 25 May: Presidential Lecture
– Tuesday and Thursday, 26/28 May: Frontiers in Research Lectures
– Wednesday, 27 May: Leadership Lecture

In addition, the Great Debate Series (Session U01) will examine developments and trends in research funding—an essential topic for anyone building a career in academia.

More information is available on the JpGU-AGU 2026 website and social media channels. I encourage everyone, especially our ECS members, to take a moment to look beyond their own sessions and see what else the meeting has to offer.
