#1. Foreword by Yukihiro Takahashi, President of JpGU

Needless to say, Earth and planetary sciences are closely related
to human life in the past, present, and future. Tomorrow’s weather,
global warming, earthquakes and volcanic activity directly affect
our daily lives. Fluctuations in the ionosphere and upper atmosphere
may seem a bit far for the average person, but they actually affect
the accuracy of GPS and the function of satellites that protect our
lives. Changes in the structure of the Earth’s interior and atmosphere/
ocean over long periods of time are not unrelated to climate change.
Even the study of clouds on the surface of distant planets may provide
clues to the future of the Earth.
<段落変え> Despite these obvious facts, the general public may have the impression that Earth and planetary science research, while certainly interesting, is a bit out-of-this-real lives. However, I believe that researchers in the Earth and planetary sciences have firsthand experience of the fact that phenomena that at first glance appear to be unrelated often have a deep causal relationship with each other. If we only pursue visible crises and challenges, it will be difficult for humankind to acquire methods for survival. Engineering and medical science, which deal with relatively visible phenomena, are important for human survival, but if we focus only on these fields, it will be difficult to acquire sufficient knowledge for our descendants to survive for the next hundred or thousand years. <段落変え>The SDGs that we are aware of today may be superficial and direct in a sense. Of course, there is no doubt that the waste and pollution in front of us is important. However, I feel that those of us who are in touch with earth and planetary science have a responsibility to communicate our diverse findings to society based on imaginative but observational facts about the deeper layers of the earth and planetary environment. <段落変え>Until now, the importance of such basic scientific findings has been discussed along with the perspective of school education or some educational TV programs. Recently, the number of excellent scientific programs that can be enjoyed by the general public seems increasing. However, I feel that this is still not enough. The gap between "pure science" and "useful science and technology" does not seem to have narrowed. We must not only convey to the general public the pure joy of knowing and researching, but also properly communicate to society the fact that such knowledge will be relevant to the human society of tomorrow. By the way, the activities of academic societies, which form part of our research, have been supported mainly by membership/participation fees collected from individual researchers' private or public research funds. In a sense, it is natural for us to bear the burden of our own activities. <段落変え>On the other hand, I believe that properly communicating that our research contributes to society and humankind, and receiving direct support not only through the government in the form of taxes, but also directly from companies and the general public, will have great significance beyond simply obtaining funds for our activities. JpGU is currently developing a framework for this purpose, and plans to make an appeal to private sectors in the near future. Your understanding and cooperation in these activities would be greatly appreciated. -------------------------------------------------------------------- #2. there were not enough applicants to use the service in the first
place and to determine this year’s needs.

Survey period:
February 28 (Monday) to April 30 (Sunday), 2023

* Please answer on the assumption that the current situation
(under COVID-19) will continue.
