#1. Foreword by Takashi Oguchi, President of JpGU

This year, Japan hosted two major international conferences in Earth and planetary sciences. One was the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting held in Makuhari in May, and the other was the AOGS Annual Meeting held in Fukuoka in August. Hosting such international conferences provides a valuable opportunity to raise the international profile of Earth and Planetary Sciences in Japan, and it is desirable to have as many such opportunities as possible.

At the same time, because the two meetings were held only a few months apart, there was some concern that researchers from overseas might choose to attend only one, potentially reducing participation in both. In fact, however, the Makuhari meeting attracted the largest number of participants in JpGU’s history, while the Fukuoka meeting also recorded the highest attendance in AOGS history. It was therefore a great pleasure for the organizers of the two meetings to celebrate each other’s success. JpGU signed an MoU with AOGS in 2006 and has collaborated with the organization for many years. We will continue to strengthen this cooperation for the development of both organizations.

What particularly impressed me at both meetings was the active participation of many young Japanese researchers, who gave presentations and engaged in discussions in English. In Japan, the cost of attending overseas international conferences has recently risen substantially due to the depreciation of the yen and higher prices. This makes it increasingly difficult for early-career researchers, including students, to participate in overseas meetings. In this regard, holding international conferences in Japan is important for providing young researchers with opportunities for international research exchange.

The previous AOGS Annual Meeting in Japan was held in 2014 in Sapporo, and the next opportunity will be some time away. It is therefore important for the annual JpGU Meeting to provide an environment in which researchers can experience international research exchange while remaining in Japan. Although the 2027 JpGU Meeting will not be held jointly with AGU, I believe that continuing to offer a range of English-language sessions and encouraging young researchers to participate will help develop the next generation of geoscientists in Japan.
