====================================================================
#1. Foreword by Takashi Oguchi, President of JpGU

We extend our heartfelt sympathies to all those affected by the 2026 Kumamoto Earthquake.

At the Board of Directors meeting held on July 27, the executive leadership and committee structure for the new JpGU term were formally established. While the President and First Vice President had already been elected in June, the Board approved the appointment of three additional Vice Presidents. Together with the Immediate Past President, these six members form the JpGU Leadership Team, which will meet regularly to discuss important matters concerning the overall management and strategic direction of the Union. The Board also approved the membership of the Union’s committees, including those responsible for General Affairs, Finance, Meeting Organization, Information Systems, Global Strategy, Publicity and Outreach, Environment and Disaster Coping, Diversity Management and Talent Pool, Educational Affairs, Publication Steering and Planning, Journal Editorial Committee, Awards, and Ethics. Each committee will carry out its activities under the leadership of its chair, vice chair, secretary, and the Board member assigned to the committee. The Board immediately began discussing several important issues for the coming term. One of the key topics was how to build on the achievements of the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026, the largest meeting in JpGU’s history, which also recorded the highest proportion of English-language presentations.

The Board meetings are attended not only by directors but also, as appropriate, by officers of JpGU’s five scientific sections and other members. Staff members of the JpGU office, whose support is essential to the Union’s operation, also participate in these discussions. Close collaboration among people with diverse roles and responsibilities is fundamental to the continued success of JpGU. The directors, officers of the five scientific sections, and committee officers serve on behalf of JpGU’s approximately 10,000 members. For this reason, the Union’s activities and governance must reflect the views of its membership. If you have any comments or suggestions regarding JpGU’s activities or operations, I encourage you to share them with members of the Leadership Team, the Board of Directors, or the officers of your scientific section. Your continued understanding, support, and cooperation are greatly appreciated.

‘Kuroshio Extension cold-core ring and wind drop-off observed in 2021–2022 winter’.

This study describes results from the observations of a cold core ring that formed to south of the Kuroshio Extension. It provides a detailed account of environmental changes within and around the ring, capturing the process of cold-water intrusion into the ring and subtle changes in sea surface wind, making it particularly interesting for understanding the eddy’s impact on the larger-scale oceanic system.

[Solid earth sciences]

@Naoko Shinmoto & Toshitaka Baba;
‘A methodology for appropriate withdrawal of tsunami warnings based on numerical simulations’.

This paper addresses a highly practical issue in tsunami disaster mitigation: when tsunami warnings and advisories can be appropriately withdrawn. Using large-scale numerical simulations and tide-gauge records from the 2011 Tohoku and 2010 Maule tsunamis, the authors quantitatively evaluate tsunami attenuation and the timing of warning withdrawal. Their application to a potential great Nankai Trough earthquake highlights the societal relevance of simulation-based tsunami forecasting. The study is an excellent example of research that links solid-earth science with operational disaster prevention.
