#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU
On April 10, 2026, the Artemis II crew safely returned to Earth, splashing down in the Pacific after a historic ten-day journey. This mission marked the first time since 1972 that humanity has reached so close to the moon. While the flight was a technical triumph, it wasn’t without its human moments—like the minor but headline-grabbing story of frozen urine in the toilet!
Minor plumbing mishaps aside, this successful mission highlights the great strides in technology that have been achieved over recent decades. It also accelerates the transition of the Moon from an object primarily of observation to a sphere of human activities. A landmark 2024 agreement between Japan and the U.S. brings this even closer to home, paving the way for the first Japanese astronaut to set foot on the lunar surface, and central to these plans is the ‘Lunar Cruiser’, a 6-wheel drive pressurized camping car being developed by Toyota and JAXA. Given Toyota’s involvement, what else could be it be called?
As the Moon becomes a site for development, we face complex questions. These range from the mundane—such as naming lunar features fairly—to the knotty issues of resource ownership and ensuring lunar data remain a global public good. While we celebrate these achievements, we must remain vigilant regarding the governance and independence of the scientific enterprise, both on the Moon and here on Earth.
At JpGU, our core mission remains research and education. However, scientific governance and our engagement with society are increasingly moving to center stage. From climate change to shifting funding models, the challenges are significant.
At the upcoming JpGU–AGU Joint Meeting (May 24–29, 2026), we will host dedicated sessions on these governance issues, including the lunchtime U01 session. I would also like to highlight our Plenary Sessions: four lunchtime events featuring eminent scientists who will weave their personal experiences with broader trends in scientific development. These sessions will conclude with a discussion period where we hope to dig deeper into the personalities and future visions of our presenters.
I invite you to join the conversation in Makuhari.

This paper describes the novel creation of a high-precision land cover dataset for the entire Siberian region using machine learning (Random Forest). Classification accuracy for mixed forests and grasslands has been significantly improved, and the relationship between vegetation zones and climatic factors (temperature and precipitation) is also detailed. This paper is recommended as a valuable resource for research on carbon cycles in high-latitude regions and Earth system modeling.

‘Ambient noise multimode surface wave tomography’
This is review provides a systematic overview of ambient-noise surface-wave tomography based on seismic interferometry, covering the underlying theory, practical data processing, phase-velocity measurements, and construction of 3-D S-wave velocity models. A particular strength is its clear discussion of multimode surface-wave dispersion, which can improve depth resolution beyond analyses based only on the fundamental mode. The paper is therefore a valuable reference for both specialists and newcomers in seismic imaging.
