#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

New Orleans, the host city for AGU 2025, is famous for its jazz, singular food culture, Mardi Gras, and the slow, meandering power of the Mississippi River. Despite geopolitical headwinds, AGU 2025 was a vibrant gathering of more than 20,000 attendees working together to advance our understanding of Earth and space science. Among the many sessions, events, and exhibitions, for me the three plenary sessions stood out—moments to pause and take in the voices of three storytellers and travelers, each approaching truth from a different direction.

Former New Orleans mayor Mitch Landrieu delivered an impassioned defense of diversity and democracy, speaking to the tension between ideals and pragmatism. He reflected on rebuilding the city after Hurricane Katrina and confronting the difficult truths of its past. He reminded us that democracy, like science, depends on the ability to disagree, revise, and arrive at collective understanding. Drawing on the metaphor of jazz, he described how musicians weave individual stories together—sometimes clashing or improvising—yet always listening, returning to the rhythm, and arriving at a shared often glorious conclusion.

Ayana Johnson bridges science, environmental policy, and lives lived beyond the laboratory or meeting room. She described conversations with local fishermen who know, with painful clarity, that they can no longer fish as they once did. While they understand the need for regulation, they also recognize which policies work and which do not. Johnson showed that effective policy must be grounded in what is feasible on the ground and what people want for their families.

John Francis, ‘planetwalker’ and environmentalist, gave up motorized travel after witnessing a devastating oil spill in San Francisco. After years of arguing his reasons, he realized that argument limited his ability to learn. He fell silent for a day, then a year, and ultimately broke that silence only after 17 years of study and reflection. His story invites us to reflect, an encouragement to reach across differences and imagine alternative futures.

Like the meanders of the Mississippi River that formed the backdrop for these stories (and the AGU brand imagery), our collective journey toward truth and a better future will twist and turn, but it can be shaped through our actions and understood through the stories we share.
