#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

It is exam season for many graduate schools in Japan. A common question asked to applicants at the interview is what sparked their research interests. A number of students told us that their visit to JpGU, where they could hear a wide range of talks and meet many members of our community, was a decisive moment. This is a great reminder that nurturing the next generation of Earth and planetary scientists is one of our most important missions, and that our annual meeting lies at the heart of this effort. Looking ahead, our society will soon hold elections and there will be a significant change in the governance with an increase in the number of directors from 20 to 30, and this is a good time to reflect on the many roles that keep JpGU strong. From the representatives (daigi-in) and directors to the various science board members, committee members, and the volunteers including those who serve as judges for the Outstanding Student Presentation Award (OSPA), JpGU is founded on the dedicated efforts of its members and volunteers. If you are considering how to contribute more actively, I encourage you to explore these opportunities. The deadline to raise your hand and put yourself forward as a candidate is 17:00 Thursday 11 September. Your participation is vital to helping us grow and shape the future of our society.

As we prepare for the elections, we are also looking ahead to JpGU-AGU 2026. Session proposals will open on 17 September. Each session may have up to six conveners, and I would be delighted to see more early-career scientists involved, as well as a diverse mix of conveners from around the world.
