#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

How should the global geoscience community respond to attacks on science? That was the urgent question at a late-breaking Great Debate, which was the final session of the EGU 2025 General Assembly. Despite being held on Friday afternoon, the 500-seat room was packed and many were standing in the aisles. On stage were six eminent speakers: leaders from the AGU, the Geological Society of America, the International Science Council, and leading climate scientists. Late-breaking sessions are usually reserved for natural disasters. This time, we tackled a man-made one.

We heard how U.S. scientists have lost jobs and funding; federal travel support has been slashed, curbing national and international collaboration; and those early career researchers who weathered the COVID-19 crisis are once again having to face unprecedented disruption. And it’s not just people: critical datasets and research infrastructure are also at risk.

Scientific societies such as JpGU must serve broad communities and steer clear of partisanship—but defending scientists and their science is part of our mission. So how do we act?

AGU has joined legal proceedings. Also, joint statements, like the one led by EGU and co-signed by JpGU (*), help push back. Some European institutions are now offering refuge for at-risk scientists and their data. For now, this is a U.S. issue. But other nations may follow a similar path. Engaging voters, and the politicians they elect, is key to help fend off the worst-case scenario. Helping the public understand how science serves them is now more than ever a vital part of the work we do as scientists and societies.

We need to move beyond the mindset that says “I’ve got my weather app, who needs a weather agency?” Not all scientists have the opportunity or inclination to get involved in science communication—but everyone can help. JpGU 2025 is just around the corner, with many exciting sessions. This is also an opportunity to take a moment to explore beyond research: attend a debate, support a student, spark curiosity. These small actions help secure a healthy future for our science, our scientists and our planet.

@ Tomoaki Nishikawa, Satoshi Ide, Takuya Nishimura;
A review on slow earthquakes in the Japan Trench.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-022-00528-w
This paper explores slow earthquakes in the Japan Trench and their role in interplate deformation. The 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake provided crucial insights into their activity. The study reviews observational, experimental, and simulation-based research, analyzing their distribution. Slow and megathrust earthquakes are spatially complementary, with slow earthquakes sometimes triggering fast ones. A 200-km gap in slow earthquake activity coincides with a locked zone that was the epicenter of the Tohoku-Oki earthquake. Comparisons with crustal structures, such as sediment layers and subducting seamounts, reveal geological influences. Findings suggest that high fluid pressure plays a key role in slow earthquake occurrence. Enhanced monitoring of slow earthquakes could improve seismic forecasting for the Japan Trench.

@Nobuhiro Moteki;
Climate-relevant properties of black carbon aerosols revealed by in situ measurements: a review.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00544-4
This paper discusses the impact of light-absorbing aerosols, especially black carbon (BC), on atmospheric radiation and climate. BC is a key factor in shortwave absorption, requiring detailed field observations for accurate climate predictions. The study reviews past research,
