#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)
The Italian newspaper Il Folio recently published an issue entirely generated by AI. The journalists’ role was simply to ask questions and some minimal editing. It was an experiment—and a clever publicity stunt. But it also serves as a timely reminder of the challenges many professions face as they grapple with how to incorporate AI into their activities. Research scientists and academic societies are no exception.
AI can access and process data far more efficiently than humans. Yet it is far from infallible—its reliability depends heavily on the quality of the data it is trained on. Biased or incomplete datasets can lead to flawed conclusions. Moreover, AI can be manipulated to spread misinformation or promote a one-sided view. The lack of transparency in many AI-generated results makes it difficult to verify their accuracy, which can undermine trust in academic findings.
The use of AI to generate content also raises questions about authorship. Who takes credit for something written by AI based on the work of others? Is posing intelligent questions enough to warrant being listed as the lead author on a scientific paper or a presentation at a major international conference? The blurring of authorship lines challenges long-standing academic norms and demands careful consideration.
AI is undoubtedly a powerful tool—it can improve efficiency, reveal hidden patterns in large datasets, and free up time for more creative and analytical tasks. However, overreliance on AI risks diminishing the authenticity of scholarly dialogue, replacing original insights with machine-generated content. Ensuring fairness, transparency, and quality control will be essential to preserve the integrity of academic work.
Beyond content generation, AI is beginning to reshape the way we organize and collaborate. One exciting possibility is using AI to help structure academic meetings. By sorting through submitted abstracts, AI could identify connections and suggest sessions or session groupings that might otherwise be missed. AI-assisted program organization has the potential to foster those serendipitous meetings of minds and ideas that lie at the heart of academic gatherings.
As we move forward, the challenge will be to harness AI’s potential while safeguarding the principles of scholarship. By embracing AI’s efficiency without compromising on transparency, accountability, and human creativity, we can enhance, rather than erode, the quality and trustworthiness of scholarly work.

We will introduce the featured articles selected by the editor-in-chief from the papers published in the past.

"Geophysical investigation of the Mado Megamullion oceanic core complex: implications for the end of back-arc spreading"
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00570-2
This paper determines the detailed characteristics and formation processes of the Mado Megamullion oceanic core complex (OCC) in the Philippine Sea Plate. The results indicate that a decrease in melt supply and the dominance of tectonic expansion are widespread phenomena in the termination of back-arc basin formation.
@Atsushi Okamoto, Ryosuke Oyanagi;
"Si- versus Mg-metasomatism at the crust–mantle interface: insights from experiments, natural observations and geochemical modeling"
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00568-w
In this review paper, the effects of alternation at the crust-mantle boundary are discussed in terms of hydrothermal experiments, natural metamorphic rock production patterns, and geochemical modeling. The results indicate that fluid compositions in subduction zones may alter the mechanical behavior of the plate boundary more than previously thought.
