#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

Happy New Year! I wish everyone an excellent and prosperous 2025.

Looking back on the previous year, I am reminded that in Tokyo, where I live, 2024 began with smart phone alarms giving an early warning in response to the New Year’s Day earthquake in the Noto peninsula. This was followed later in the year by the Hualien Earthquake in Taiwan and heavy rainfall in the Noto peninsula in September added to the first disaster. My thoughts go out to all those who were affected by these events and to those who continue to suffer from their losses. Japan and Taiwan both lie on plate boundaries and are also commonly visited by monsoons making these areas prone to multiple complex natural disasters. Part of the role of the field of Earth and planetary science is to help in mitigating these risks and building a resilient society, one where loss of life and property is minimized, and recovery is quick. How geoscience societies and scientists can help in this endeavor is the theme for one of the union sessions at JpG2025. This session will bring together experts from Japan and around the word and will be organized with representative of our partner societies, including the American Geophysical Union, the European Geosciences Union, Asia Oceania Geosciences Society and Chinese Geoscience Union in Taiwan.

JpGU2025 has the makings of a record-breaking meeting. The number of accepted sessions is about 10% more than in 2024. If attendance numbers follow this pattern, we can expect close to 9,000 attendees in JpGU2025! This is a very welcome sign of our recovery after the Covid pandemic. But large attendance is not an aim in itself. One of the benefits is the opportunity large meetings provide for exploring cross- and multidisciplinary approaches to problems. Last year’s special sessions on the Noto peninsula earthquake brought together experts from a wide range of different backgrounds and was very well received. As our meeting grows, we continue to look at ways in which we can add value for those attending. One example is the field trips. A much expanded program was first organized last year and a similar set of trips will be on offer for JpGU2025. I hope many people will take advantage of these and other opportunities offered by the events program. Of course, sessions and presentations form the core of any academic meeting, and those of you who are thinking of submitting an abstract please remember, early-bird registration is until February 6 and the final deadline is February 18 at 17:00.

[Childcare support during the JpGU Meeting 2025]

At the JpGU Meeting 2025, as in the previous year, an on-site childcare room will be set up throughout the meeting. As in previous years, we also plan to support the use of off-site childcare facilities and services.
In addition, as a new initiative this year, we are also considering setting up a room for primary school children to spend time on the first day of the meeting (Sunday).
Further information on childcare support will be provided in the e-newsletter and on the website.

#5. Information from PEPS

(1) Notice of 2025 APC (Article Processing Charge):
We sincerely appreciate your continued support and understanding of PEPS.

PEPS has a publishing agreement with SpringerNature that allows for an annual increase in the APC by a maximum of 5%. This is a measure to avoid a large increase in the APC presented by the publisher at one time. The new APC rates for 2025 are as follows: 1,870 USD / 1,560 EUR / 1,340 GBP. JpGU members are entitled to a 20% discount, reducing the APC to 1,496 USD / 1,248 EUR / 1,072 GBP. (For Japanese authors, the price is in US dollars. The new APC will be applied from the date of acceptance of the paper in 2025.)

For further details, please visit the PEPS website.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause and appreciate your understanding.

(2) Featured Articles
We will introduce the featured articles selected by the editor-in-chief from the papers published in the past.

Comparison of the LBM snowdrift model output with the observation results.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00599-3
This paper reports on improvements to the snowdrift model through parallelization and quantitative treatment of snow particles, enabling high-speed, long-term simulations. In urban development in snowy regions, inadequate consideration of snowdrifts can lead to reduced safety and increased maintenance costs. The model in this study can predict snowdrifts that form around various road structures and is expected to be useful in practical applications.

@ Yu Morishita, Ryu Sugimoto, Ryosuke Nakamura, Chiaki Tsutsumi, Ryo Natsuaki, Masanobu Shimada;
Nationwide urban ground deformation in Japan for 15 years detected by ALOS and Sentinel-1.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00597-5
This paper measured surface deformation in all major urban areas of Japan from 2006 to 2020 using time-series interferometric SAR analysis of ALOS and Sentinel-1 data, and discussed the trends in deformation over the 15-year period.
