#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2024-2026)

The evening sky on Mars is blue. This was something I learned just recently from watching the drama on Japanese television, Sora wataru kyoushitsu (classroom in the sky). A group of disparate students young and old who gather to attend night-time high school. The students have the good fortune to be led by a caring teacher who nudges them gently forwards on a path of exploration, encouraging them to follow their natural curiosity. Conflict and at least partial resolution, and characters with complex backstories are staples for this type of show. One of the things that makes this drama stand out and interesting is the focus on understandable accessible science. The story is based on a novel by Shin Iyohara who has a doctorate in geoscience and who uses his specialist knowledge to make the story more engaging and meaningful. The students are doing simple experiments to look at subjects like the size of meteor craters and the color of the Martian sky. The students have been set the goal
of giving a presentation at an academic conference like our own JpGU meeting! JpGU and its members have given advice during the production of this series.

We have just finished accepting session proposals for JpGU 2025 and are pleased to see an increase of roughly 10% compared to last year. We look forward to seeing our meeting grow and welcoming more participants both from within Japan and around the world. As part of the program, we continue the practice of hosting a session for high school students. At JpGU 2024 we had more than 100 entries from schools all over Japan. I encourage everyone to take a few moments to pass by to look at the work of the young scientists and spend a few minutes talking to them. One chance meeting with someone whose words resonate may be all that’s needed to nudge potential scientists on their own path of discovery.

“Features of the Earth’s seasonal hydroclimate: characterizations and comparisons across the Köppen–Geiger climates and across continents”.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-023-00574-y
This paper re-examines the Köppen–Geiger climate classification traditionally used in the field of climatology, using data on river flow time series as well as those of temperature and precipitation. It analyzes seasonal variations in each region from a modern perspective, such as using machine learning techniques. The focus on the seasonal time scale and the introduction of river flow data characterize this study, which can be referred to as a scientific basis for understanding global hydrological circulation.
