#1. Foreword by Yukihiro Takahashi, President of JpGU
2024 JpGU meeting is getting closer. Once again, we would like to ask as many people as possible to visit the venue and cooperate in making the meeting a lively one. On the other hand, we hope that those who are unable to participate physically due to circumstances will be able to participate meaningfully online. The number of participants at the EGU General Assembly (GA) held in this April was over 20,000, more than last year, and the number of local participants increased by more than 10% to 18,000. In addition to the recovery from the COVID, I imagine that the recognition of the importance of earth and planetary
science in social maintains this increase. There was a particularly high proportion of young participants, with 57% of the abstracts coming from Early Career Scientists (within 7 years of receiving their highest degree). The Early Career Scientists Networking Reception was so successful that young people filled the hall and couldn’t move.
Additionally, a large gathering of school teachers was held during the conference, and many teachers from European countries visited our JpGU booth. I realized once again that in order for Japan to play an active role in the field of earth and planetary science in the future, it is important to attract young scientists and elementary, junior high, and high school teachers. Registration for JpGU is free for undergraduates and below, so university faculty members are encouraged to invite their students who normally listen to your lectures to participate, as well as their laboratories (registration may take some time, so please register early). Even if the students are far away to come or have difficulty paying for travel, they can view almost all presentations online, both oral and poster presentations (online, Q&A of posters are only possible via chat). It might be interesting to ask students to list presentations they are interested in as part of their lecture assignments. We encourage everyone attending the meeting, especially students and young researchers, to take a stroll around the poster venue during their free time. Isn’t it a luxurious opportunity to be able to get a bird’s-eye view of cutting-edge research in other fields that you don’t usually come into contact with just by walking around the venue? We hope that both mid-career and senior students can
enjoy the cross-border networking that is unique to JpGU.
I’m looking forward to seeing you all at social gatherings as well!

(13) Announcement from Union Session
[Request from JpGU2024 U-08 Conveners]
Union Session U-08 “What is the true value of knowledge creation? Our perceptions of science and society” (Conveners: Michiyo Shimamura, Yuko Onishi, Mark Mocettini Shimamoto and Kiyoshi Suyehiro), conducted a survey to the JpGU community in 2023. Based on the results, now we have started another questionnaire survey.
The background, purpose, and method of response are as follows. We look forward to your cooperation.
(Response time: 10-15 minutes)
Background: There is a wide range of research, from “research that responds to the mandate of society” to “research that responds to the intellectual curiosity of humankind.
In the survey conducted during the U-04 session at the JpGU 2022 Congress, it was found that the members of this community believe that it is necessary to connect science and society, and that researchers are the main actors in this connection, but that the lack of time and funding to carry out this connection and the lack of recognition of scientific achievements are issues that need to be addressed.
Therefore, in the U-07 session of the JpGU Meeting 2023, we discussed “Establishment of a system with stakeholders, lack of resources, and lack of evaluation of scientific performance, which are important in connecting science and society,” and conducted a questionnaire survey. As a result, it was found that (1) science communicators, universities/research institutes, and elementary/junior high schools are major stakeholders, (2) financial support and establishment of support organizations focused to activities “linking science and society,” and (3) clarification of activity evaluation (parameters and quantification) are considered to solve the issues.
Purpose: To investigate effective collaboration for “connecting science and society” by type of research and specific proposals for performance evaluation to promote social collaboration.
The results of this survey will be shared with the cooperating researchers at a later date. We look forward to your cooperation.
Closing date of this survey: Friday, 7 June 2024
