#1. Foreword by Yukihiro Takahashi, President of JpGU

Voting for the JpGU delegate election began on October 3, and the
deadline for voting is Thursday, November 2 at 17:00, so please don’t
forget to cast your ballot on the web page. Here, I would like to
give you a brief overview of the activities of Representatives and
Directors of JpGU.

Each section has a fixed number of representatives according to the
number of its members, bringing the total number of delegates to 150.
The most important role of the representatives is to attend the annual
general meeting of members and participate in its proceedings. Also,
20 members of the Board of Directors are elected from among the
representatives. Section presidents are selected by the incoming
representatives. Section activities are discussed and directed by a
Section Board (members are chosen differently for each section),
consisting primarily of representatives. Recently, the leadership of
the Section Board has been actively discussing and acting on issues
such as the consolidation of opinions on the promotion of the English
use at the meeting and the planning of lectures at the meeting by the
sections themselves.

Directors elected by the representatives, together with section
presidents and other observers, attend the bimonthly board meeting
(usually lasting about 2.5 hours) to deliberate and report on their
duties. In addition, the directors with particularly important
responsibilities, such as general affairs, finance, and meeting
management, participate in the expanded executive board meeting
(usually about 1.5 hours) held every Monday with the president and
vice presidents to share information and discuss particularly urgent
matters. In addition, the president, vice presidents, and former
president meet weekly for about 1.5 hours to share information on the
activities of their assigned committees and discuss major directions
and other issues.

Many of the representatives serve as chairs or members of various JpGU
committees and support the substantive activities of JpGU. For topics
that require intensive consideration, task forces and working groups
are established under the Board of Directors and other bodies, as
appropriate, with set deadlines for their activities. If you are
interested in contributing to the activities of JpGU, please contact
a committee chair or a board member. We would also appreciate it if
delegates would take the opinions and requests of the members close
to them and convey them to the section boards and directors.

Representative elections are an important opportunity to elect people
who will play an important role in the JpGU and determine the overall
direction of the organization. We would like to thank you again for
your vote in advance.

#2. Asking you to Vote for Representative Election

the official announcement of representative election is eligible to

Each electoral zone will choose a fixed number of representatives.

for their electoral zone.

(2) Featured Articles
We will introduce the featured articles selected by the editor-in-
chief from the papers published in the past.

and Nankai seismogenic zones and its spatiotemporal relationship
with interplate coupling and slow earthquakes.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-022-00493-4
A paper evaluating the spatiotemporal distribution of seismic wave
velocity structural inhomogeneity and interplate earthquakes by
conducting seismic tomography after detecting microearthquakes off
the Kii Peninsula using DONET data.

@Erick R. Velasco-Reyes et al.: Paleotsunami history of Hachinohe,
northern Japan: a multiproxy analysis and numerical modeling approach.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-022-00477-4
Paleo-tsunami traces in the Shimokita Peninsula may be related to
earthquakes in the Japan Trench along the Sanriku Coast and those in
the Kurushima Trench along the Pacific Coast of Hokkaido. This study
examined the paleotsunami history in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture,
Japan. As a result, seven layers of paleo-tsunami deposits formed
between 5.5 and 2.7 ka were identified, suggesting that the average
tsunami interval in the area is 384 years. This result is significant
for clarifying the history of large earthquakes in the Japan Trench
and the Kuril Islands Trench.
