#2. Post 2022 Meeting Announcements

Request for Cooperation of the Post-Conference Questionnaire Survey
from JpGU2022 U-04 Conveners

Union Session U-04 “What is the true value of knowledge creation? ”
(Conveners: Michiyo Shimamura, Kiyoshi Suyehiro and Brooks Hanson),
conducted a survey to the JpGU community on the significance of
“knowledge creation” activities in the field of Earth and planetary
sciences in 2020. The results of the survey showed that JpGU members
recognized its fundamental scientific significance as the most
important (JGL 17-1, 2021). On the other hand, the survey of the
AGU community showed that they also highly regarded the significance
of responding to the mandate of society, and this tendency was more
pronounced among the younger generation.

The purpose of this survey is to find out what exactly the JpGU
community members see as “responding to society’s mandate” and what
kind of activities, etc., they are actually engaged in with regard to
“responding to society’s mandate.” We would very much appreciate
your cooperation in filling out the questionnaire (estimated response
time: approximately 10 minutes).

The deadline for responses has been extended and your cooperation is
highly appreciated! Please respond as soon as possible.

Response deadline (Extended!): September 30

#3. Announcement for 2022 Meeting Participation ID Holders and AGU
members who have acquired a JpGU ID from the AGU membership system

[To 2022 Meeting Participation ID holders]
The “Meeting participation ID” is a six-digit ID starting with 22-,
specifically for the purpose of the participation in the JpGU Meeting
2022. These IDs will expire on Friday, September 30, 2022.
A new ID must be obtained to participate in JpGU Meeting 2023.

This also applies to AOGS and EGU members who have obtained the JpGU
ID to participate in the JpGU 2022.
We will open the system to obtain the 2023 participation ID in October.
Please visit our website in October for further information.

[To AGU members who have acquired a JpGU ID from the AGU membership
system]

Those who have obtained a JpGU ID from the AGU membership system
will have their AGU membership verified after each year’s JpGU meeting,
and the JpGU IDs will be deleted if their status is no longer valid.
This year, we will check your membership status as of September 26, and
those whose JpGU IDs are invalid will have their JpGU IDs deleted on
September 30.

The current system does not allow you to cancel your JpGU ID via AGU.
If you have a valid AGU membership but do not wish to keep your
JpGU ID via AGU, please contact us using the form below.
https://business.form-mailer.jp/fms/514bf711152884

Please note that the login authentication will be required until March
31, 2023 to view the contents of the 2022 meeting posted on the Meeting
participation site (Confit), but all ID holders mentioned above can
still login with their login ID/password for the 2022 meeting even
after the ID becomes invalid.

(2) Featured Articles
We will introduce the featured articles selected by the editor-in-chief
from the papers published in the past every month.

@ Luca Bindi et al.:
Can quasicrystals survive in planetary collisions?
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-021-00421-y
Compression behavior of icosahedrite (Al63Cu24Fe13), a quasicrystal
found for the first time in nature, from the Khatyrka meteorite found
in eastern Russia, was investigated by in situ powder diffractometry
using a diamond anvil cell. Experimental results show that this
mineral does not show any changes related to structural phase
transitions or amorphization even under high pressure suggesting that
it has existed for a long time in geological time.

@ Yu Morishita et al.
Nationwide urban ground deformation monitoring in Japan using
Sentinel-1 LiCSAR products and LiCSBAS.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-020-00402-7
Using LiCSAR products and LiCSBAS, the author calculated detailed
spatiotemporal surface deformation time series and velocities in 73
major urban areas in Japan from 2014 to 2020. As a result, he newly
found that there are areas where many crustal movements with various
spatiotemporal characteristics such as linear land subsidence, abrupt
land subsidence, annual vertical deformation, and linear uplift.

@ Shigeki Hosoda et al.
Rapid water parcel transport across the Kuroshio Extension in the lower
thermocline from dissolved oxygen measurements by Seaglider.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-021-00406-x
This paper presents a detailed analysis of the dynamics of a small
water mass detected by analyzing data obtained by the autonomous
oceanographic instrument Seaglider. The existence of such small water
masses, also supported by numerical simulations, may influence the
water mass formation on larger scales. It is clearly illustrated that
the new oceanographic instrument can yield valuable findings.
