#2. Post 2022 Meeting Announcements

(1) Certificates of attendance and presentation

The deadline for applying for the certificates is approaching.
If you would like to request a certificate, please visit the following
website and fill out the form.
https://www.jpgu.org/meeting_e2022/for_researcher.php#about_certificates

Application deadline: August 31 (WED), 2022

(2) Request from JpGU2022 U-04 Conveners

Union Session U-04 “What is the true value of knowledge creation? ”
(Conveners: Michiyo Shimamura, Kiyoshi Suyehiro and Brooks Hanson),
conducted a survey to the JpGU community on the significance of
“knowledge creation” activities in the field of Earth and planetary
sciences in 2020. The results of the survey showed that JpGU members
recognized its fundamental scientific significance as the most
important (JGL 17-1, 2021). On the other hand, the survey of the AGU
community showed that they also highly regarded the significance of
responding to the mandate of society, and this tendency was more
pronounced among the younger generation.

The purpose of this survey is to find out what exactly the JpGU
community members see as “responding to society’s mandate” and what
kind of activities, etc., they are actually engaged in with regard to
“responding to society’s mandate.” We would very much appreciate your
cooperation in filling out the questionnaire (estimated response
time: approximately 10 minutes).

Response deadline: August 31

(4) Contact tool between conveners and presenters

The mailing list that was provided as a tool for communication between
conveners and presenters at the 2022 meeting will be closed on
August 31.

(5) Public Release of 2022 Meeting Participation Site (Confit)

The 2022 meeting participation site (Confit) will be open to the
public after the viewing period of the meeting contents (abstracts,
presentation materials, etc.) for the meeting participants only.

Browsing period for the meeting participants: until March 31 (FRI), 2023

After April 1, 2023, the security of Confit will be removed and login
will not be required to view the site. All presentation materials
except for the abstracts will be deleted.

#4. Announcement for 2022 Meeting Participation ID Holders and AGU
members who have acquired a JpGU ID from the AGU membership system

[To 2022 Meeting Participation ID holders]
The “Meeting participation ID” is a six-digit ID starting with 22-,
specifically for the purpose of the participation in the JpGU Meeting
2022. These IDs will expire on Friday, September 30, 2022.
A new ID must be required to participate in JpGU Meeting 2023.

This also applies to AOGS and EGU members who have obtained the JpGU
ID to participate in the JpGU 2022.
We will open the system to obtain the 2023 participation ID after October.
Please visit our website after October for further information.

[To AGU members who have acquired a JpGU ID from the AGU membership
system]

Those who have obtained a JpGU ID from the AGU membership system
will have their AGU membership verified after each year’s JpGU meeting,
and the JpGU IDs will be deleted if their status is no longer valid.
This year, we will check your membership status as of September 26, and
those whose JpGU IDs are invalid will have their JpGU IDs deleted on
September 30.

The current system does not allow you to cancel your JpGU ID via AGU.
If you have a valid AGU membership but do not wish to keep your
JpGU ID via AGU, please contact us using the form below.
https://business.form-mailer.jp/fms/514bf711152884

Please note that the login authentication will be required until March
31, 2023 to view the contents of the 2022 meeting posted on the Meeting
participation site (Confit), but all ID holders mentioned above can
still login with their login ID/password for the 2022 meeting even
after the ID becomes invalid.

#5. Information from PEPS

(1) Call for papers to “2011 Tohoku earthquake”

The submission deadline for the following SPEPS special issue, which
is currently accepting submissions, is the end of August 2022.

If you are considering submitting, please take note of the submission
deadline.

(2) Featured Articles

We will introduce the featured articles selected by the editor-in-chief
from the papers published in the past every month.

Self-similar stochastic slip distributions on a non-planar fault for
tsunami scenarios for megathrust earthquakes.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-020-00360-0
In this paper, the authors constructed a method for probabilistically
evaluating tsunami height by generating scenario earthquakes based
on the statistical properties of fault inhomogeneous slips.

@Shunya Kaneki :
Frictional heating in a thick fault zone with empirical slip-weakening
friction: implications for slip parameter estimation from temperature
observations in deep fault drilling.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-021-00457-0
In this paper, the authors suggest that coseismic information with
spatio-temporal extent, such as shear stress and friction coefficient,
are lost due to heat diffusion when the temperature observations
are conducted.

@ Jun Kameda :
Mineralogical and physico-chemical properties of halloysite-bearing
slip surface material from a landslide during the 2018 Eastern Iburi
earthquake,Hokkaido.
https://doi.org/10.1186/s40645-021-00428-5
This paper discusses the cause of the destructive landslides triggered
by the 6.7 Mw Eastern Iburi earthquake. Most of the shallow landslides
exhibited long runouts along gentle hill slopes, with characteristic
halloysite-bearing slip surface at the base of the volcanic soils.
Halloysite in the slip surface had irregular-to-hollow-spherical
morphology with higher mesopore volumes than tubular halloysite,
which is related to a high capacity for water retention after
rainfall. The authors also suggested that rainwater infiltration
could have increased the absolute zeta potential value of the slip
surface halloysite l, which decreased the material’s cohesive
strength, and might have led to destabilization of the slopes.
