#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

There are just a few days left to propose a session for the JpGU-AGU 2026 Joint Meeting. The deadline is October 15, 17:00 JST, so don’t miss it! To encourage a more inclusive makeup of the conveners we have expanded the number of convener slots to up to six people. We hope this new flexibility will encourage greater diversity in the convener makeup including early-career scientists and those whose host institutions are outside of Japan. Graduate students are welcome to be conveners! It is also the time to nominate candidates for academic awards. Recognizing achievement is a key activity of academic societies. Awards are markers of achievement for the recipients and can be an important boost to their careers. But awards also have a broader significance — they help shape our community’s values, highlight directions of research, and set examples for all of us, in particular younger generations, to emulate. Finally, they also empower the recipients to advocate for geosciences within their institutions and so help contribute to the prosperity of our field. This year the awards open for nominations are: the Miyake Prize, the inaugural Wadati Award of the Solid Earth Section, the Presidential Award, the International Contribution Award and JpGU Fellows. The Nishida Prizes for mid-career scientists are only awarded once every two years and the next
opportunity to nominate someone will be in autumn 2026. So, cast a look around you and consider if one of your mentors, colleagues, contemporaries or students deserves recognition. If you have a suitable candidate, consider which of our awards this person is most suited to and prepare your nomination package. Writing supporting letters can be time consuming but also makes an important contribution to our community. We are a scientific society and the main focus of our awards is research achievement. But JpGU also recognizes the significance of activities such as nurturing the next generation, outreach, and international collaboration. The Presidential and International Contribution Awards were established with the aim of celebrating the wide range of contributions outside of research that are essential to keeping our society vibrant. Let’s celebrate great work, help foster the next generation, and work together to ensure that great candidates from all backgrounds receive the recognition they deserve.

Characteristics of temporal variability of long-duration bursts of high-energy radiation associated with thunderclouds on the Tibetan plateau.
The mechanism by which lightning first is generated is one of the major outstanding problems in geophysics. Long bursts are thought to play an important role. This study analyzed 127 long bursts detected by a neutron monitor installed on the Tibetan Plateau. Intriguing results are obtained, including periodicity in the annual variation of burst frequency.
