Information regarding Hyuganada Earthquake

A major earthquake of magnitude 7.1 (provisional JMA scale) occurred in the Hyuganada at 16:42 on 8 August 2024 (JST). A tremor with an intensity of 6 lower on the Japanese seismic scale was observed in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture, and tremors with an intensity of 5 upper on the Japanese seismic scale were recorded in Miyazaki and Kagoshima Prefectures. In addition, a tsunami with a maximum wave height of about 50 cm was observed in Miyazaki Prefecture, and a landslide disaster occurred in Kagoshima Prefecture as a result of this earthquake. The epicenter of this earthquake was located at a depth of about 30 km near the western edge of the assumed epicenter of the Nankai Trough megathrust earthquake. As a result, the JMA has issued a Nankai Trough Earthquake Temporary Information (megaquake advisory) (ended on 17:00 15 Aug). The JpGU Environmental Disaster Response Committee will continue to collect information related to this earthquake.
