#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU
The Milan-Cortina Winter Olympics were a great spectacle. The UK, where I grew up, is better known for strengths in summer sports of cycling, rowing, and horse riding—all sports done sitting down! The Winter Olympics showed the same trend with the UK taking home 2 gold medals lying flat down in the skeleton! In Japan the figure skating was a highlight. The women’s final was particularly moving, both the performances and the heartfelt “sisterhood” between the American gold medalist and the two Japanese runners-up. This was equaled by the pairs event—athletic, harmonious and captivating—and made all the more poignant by the winners’ comeback after a mistake in the opening round that had nearly cost them the podium. As these warm memories of Olympic togetherness begin to fade, our screens are once again dominated by a new conflict in the Middle East. The contrast is jarring.
Behind the athletic drama of the Games lies another, more long-lasting backstory: the future of snow. Across Europe, low-elevation ski resorts are shuttering at an alarming rate. In the French Alps alone, nearly 200 smaller resorts have closed since the 1970s, with those below 1,500 meters now facing an existential crisis. As the zero-degree isotherm in the atmosphere climbs higher each decade, even artificial snowmaking, which now covers over 50% of slopes in some regions, struggles to remain viable. It is a sobering and ironic reality that the modern Winter Olympics now rely heavily on artificial snow, requiring large energy resources whose use increases the carbon footprint of the games.
These observations are a reminder that we live in an era of global pressures: climate change, dwindling resources, and a burgeoning population that continues to climb toward a projected peak of over ten billion. Tackling these challenges is one of the most urgent tasks of our time, requiring the full measure of our human ingenuity and collective resources. Regardless of the justifications offered for conflict, war represents a catastrophic drain on the very natural and human resources we need to preserve our planet. We have only one Earth, and the means to save it are finite. We must choose our path with care, or like a careless walker on a fracturing glacier, risk falling into the abyss.
