#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

The upcoming meeting, JpGU–AGU 2026, is drawing near. I hope many of you will participate from both Japan and abroad coming together to make this a fun and scientifically energizing meeting.

JpGU–AGU 2026 marks the third joint meeting with AGU. This partnership plays an important role in fostering global networks that sustain scientific activity even in times of uncertainty. The meeting will feature approximately 300 sessions covering a broad range of research across the Earth and planetary sciences. About 80% of these sessions
will be conducted in English, providing a valuable opportunity to share research outcomes with the global scientific community.

One of the strengths of JpGU is its interdisciplinary nature. In addition to sessions within your own area of expertise, I encourage you to take this opportunity to see what else is on offer in other fields. The plenary sessions, featuring scholars and researchers from around the world as well as leaders who are shaping their respective fields, promise to be both stimulating and inspiring. In addition, the Great Debate session, organized in collaboration with AGU, EGU, AOGS, and TCGU, addresses globally significant topics, in this case research funding and future research directions in the Earth and planetary sciences. Sessions focusing on emerging topics, including the impact of generative AI on scholarly publishing and the future of research, are also planned.

The meeting will continue to be held in a hybrid format. Connections and the fun of serendipitous chance encounters are best experienced though in-person participation, but the online format allows those who face challenges in traveling long distances, or who have childcare or health-related constraints, to actively participate in presentations and discussions. This accessibility is one of features that make JpGU distinctive.

Beyond the scientific sessions, there will be a wide range of opportunities, including social events and field trips. The award ceremony is an opportunity not only to recognize outstanding research achievements but also to provide an occasion to acknowledge and express our appreciation for the colleagues and mentors who support and inspire our research activities. I look forward to welcoming you in Makuhari!
