#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

The session proposals for the JpGU-AGU 2026 Joint Meeting in May have now been submitted, and I am delighted to report a record number this year. The next challenge is to weave these proposals into a coherent and exciting program. Spare a thought for the time and care that goes into this process. Each session must be balanced across multiple parameters, and finding the right fit for all of them requires both judgment and patience. We are experimenting with the use of AI to assist in this effort, but so far it remains a task best guided by the human touch.

The number of English-language sessions (E-sessions) has also reached a new high, offering a wonderful opportunity to showcase Japan’s excellent and innovative research to the world. The meeting provides an ideal setting to build networks, forge new collaborations, and strengthen the international partnerships essential to addressing global challenges. For our colleagues visiting from outside Japan, we hope you will find this a stimulating and rewarding experience, both scientifically and culturally. This all augurs well for a vibrant and well-attended event.

This year’s Geological Society of America (GSA) meeting was held in San Antonio, Texas, a historic and diverse city known for its beautiful river walk and rich Hispanic heritage. Some talks were conducted in Spanish, reflecting the growing inclusiveness of our global community. I attended both as a session chair and as a participant in the Global Geoscience Leadership meeting, a regular forum for leaders of geoscience societies, including JpGU, held four times a year.

One recurring theme in these discussions is the growing importance of geoethics, which involves maintaining integrity, transparency, and independence while engaging with governments, industry, and the public. Balancing collaboration with powerful stakeholders without compromising the principles of independent science is an ongoing challenge. The scientific landscape, particularly in the United States, is evolving rapidly. Encouragingly, the younger generation sees this as an opportunity to redefine the role of Earth and planetary sciences, with a sharper focus on their relevance to society.
These important conversations will continue at JpGU-AGU 2026. I encourage you to explore these sessions and add your voice to the dialogue. The choices we make today will help shape the future of our field.
