2026Wadati Award (Solid Earth Sciences Section Award) Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU)

The Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) is pleased to invite candidates for the “Wadati Award” . This award recognizes outstanding researchers mainly in the field of Solid Earth Sciences who have achieved international acclaim and made significant contributions to the advancement of the field. The award is named after Dr. Kiyoo Wadati, who contributed greatly to the development of Solid Earth Sciences in the early days. It is the highest award given by the Solid Earth Sciences Section of JpGU.

1. Eligibility

Candidates should be individuals who made outstanding contributions to research in the field of Solid Earth Sciences. They should be internationally recognized in various related fields to Solid Earth Sciences and currently active at the forefront of the field.

2. Number of Recipients

In principle, one recipient will be selected annually.

3. Nomination Guidelines

(1) Candidates do not have to be JpGU members, but they must be nominated by JpGU members. The nominators must confirm in advance that the candidate is willing to accept the award.
(2) Required documents (in Japanese or English, or a combination):
•Name and contact details of candidates (affiliation, address, phone number, email)

•Career summary and list of honors

•Full list of reviewed publications and a supplement highlighting the five most significant works

•Statement of recommendation (maximum 4 pages, A4 size)

•Three letters of support (approx. one A4 page). The supporting letters can be written by both JpGU members and non-members.

•Signed confirmations of ethical compliance from the candidates, the nominators, and the supporting letter writers

(3) Please note that the following individuals are not eligible to be candidates, nominators, or supporting letter writers.

•Members of the award selection committee

•President of the Solid Earth Science Section and their collaborators who have commented on the award selection committee

(4) All nomination documents must be submitted by email as a single PDF file to the Office for the Wadati Award (wadatiaward_office[at]jpgu.org) during the nomination period.

Important: If you do not receive email confirmation within one week of submission, please contact the office. Nominations without confirmation will be considered invalid.

4. Selection Committee

The selection committee will consist of members appointed by the JpGU president. The list of committee members will be kept private during the review phase. After the term of all committee members has ended, the list of committee members will be open.

5. Award Presentation

The recipient will receive a certificate and a medal at the award ceremony.
