#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2025-2026)

The submissions for JpGU 2025 are now complete and the program committee is in the process of shaping the whole program. This is a major undertaking. A large jigsaw puzzle with multidimensions: number of presentations, available space, trying to avoid overlaps with related sessions and consideration of time zones. It is no easy task and there is no perfect solution. So please be forbearing if all the requests cannot be met. I also mention that some of the field trips still have places available. Make sure you make a reservation if you wish to attend.
Casting an eye around the world beyond the meeting, the news is dominated by the whirlwind of change unleashed by the new Trump administration. Move fast and break things—once a mantra of Silicon Valley—now seems to be the governing philosophy in Washington. Rapid decisions, risk taking, and a willingness to treat failure as a learning opportunity can be hallmarks of innovation. But breaking is always easier than building.
JpGU and its partner organizations—AGU, EGU, AOGS, and TCGU—have many members who are government employees, and the shifts in U.S. policy are rippling across the world, challenging long-standing norms. DEI programs, and the principles behind them, are being questioned, even dismantled. Yet, persistent underrepresentation of some groups shows that the best talent is still not being fully tapped. There is no simple fix—correcting disparities inevitably means shifting advantage, which creates resistance. But for the long-term health of our society, we must plan for a future that is more inclusive, even if the transition is difficult. Short-term pain for long-term gain.
The ability to anticipate and shape the future is what sets humans apart. I believe there is strong consensus within JpGU that DEI efforts strengthen our community as a whole. At the same time, we should remain open to critiques—course corrections are part of progress. The challenge is to be nimble and forward-thinking, without tearing down the very foundations we need to build upon.
