#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2024-2026)

I write this as I head for Washington DC where the annual meeting of the American Geophysical Union is being held December 9-13. We have several leadership meetings planned where will discuss collaboration between JpGU and AGU and other international partners also attending the meeting.

A major topic of discussion between us and the AGU leadership will be the joint JpGU-AGU meeting that will be held in 2026 at Makuhari Messe. Preparations are being spearheaded by our task force chaired by Fumio Inagaki. Following a suggestion of the task force the theme of the meeting will be Transformative Science for Life & the Earth. This theme reflects the reality that we cannot continue our use of the Earth as it is and the potential role for academic societies such as JpGU and AGU in finding new ways to move forwards. The program committee is a second key part of the planning and will be headed by M. Satish-Kumar from JpGU and Carol Finn from AGU. It is a joint meeting so all the sessions are joint with AGU and Vice President Oguchi will be liaising with AGU to help match conveyors from JpGU and AGU. It is still early days in the planning but are looking forward to working with our AGU partners for a memorable and exciting meeting.

As always JpGU has a booth at the AGU meeting and the JoGU office members who join us work hard to advertise our activities. Some people call just out of curiosity others come looking for opportunities to collaborate, work and study in Japan. Any JpGU members who are taking part in the AGU annual meeting—and read this before the end of the meeting—please feel welcome to drop by, talk to people at the booth and even help us fold some origami!
