#1. Foreword by Simon Wallis, President of JpGU (2024-2026)

We are gearing up for JpGU 2025 and next month will see the start of session proposals. It’s a chance for all our members to help shape the next meeting in the way they want, and we look forward to hearing from everyone. To contribute to the development of our science we not only offer a platform to highlight cutting edge research but also promote opportunities for diverse participation including early career scientists, encourage interdisciplinary studies and offer links with researchers in the Earth and space science community throughout the world. Good scientific results deserve to be heard far and as wide. To achieve this, preparing presentation materials in English is essential—essential but also an extra burden for non-native speakers.

After the end of the EGU General Assembly in Vienna I had a few hours before my flight left and went to visit the Kunsthistorishches or Art History Museum. It has a particularly good collection of 16th century Dutch paintings. One I wanted to see was the Tower of Babel by Pieter Bruegel the Elder. This picture shows a story from the Old Testament with humans trying to build a tower so high it could reach the heavens above. God was displeased and decided to put a stop to these human ambitions of divinity by making the workers speak in different languages. The sudden appearance of different languages prevented them from communicating and stopped the building work in its tracks. Perhaps a good dictionary would have helped. But even in the 21st century, language is still a barrier to communication and collaboration.

Human language is complicated, it has nuances and ambiguity. The words that are best suited to getting a message across depend not only on the writer but also on the reader and the experiences and expectations that they bring with them. Can machines really understand such cultural background? Clearly not. But recent artificial intelligence-based systems can find patterns in published material which make them able to do work that was previously only conceivable for skilled humans. It has never been easier to prepare documents in multiple languages. I encourage anyone thinking of giving a presentation at the next JpGU meeting to grasp the opportunities offered by these new tools. We probably don’t want to try to build a 21st century Tower of Babel, but we do want to communicate with friends and colleagues around the world.

#3. To JpGU Meeting 2024 Participation ID Holders

The “Meeting participation ID” is a six-digit ID starting with 24-, specifically for the purpose of the participation in the JpGU Meeting 2024. These IDs will expire on 30 Monday September 2024. Please visit our website in October to obtain the participation ID for the JpGU Meeting 2025.

* The login authentication will be required until 31 March 2025 to view the contents of the 2024 meeting posted on the Meeting participation site (Confit), but only for this site, you can still login with your login ID/password for the 2024 meeting even after your ID becomes invalid.
* This also applies to AOGS and EGU members who have obtained the JpGU ID to participate in the JpGU 20252024.

#4. To AGU members who have acquired a JpGU ID from the AGU membership system

Those who have obtained a JpGU ID from the AGU membership system will have their AGU membership verified after each year’s JpGU meeting, and the JpGU IDs will be deleted if their status is no longer valid.
This year, we will check your membership status as of 21 September, and those with invalid status will have their JpGU IDs deleted on 29 September.

The current system does not allow you to cancel your JpGU ID via AGU.
If you have a valid AGU membership but do not wish to keep your JpGU ID via AGU, please contact us using the form below.

#5. Request for survey of draft sessions for JpGU-AGU Meeting 2026

The JpGU Leadership (President, Past President, and Vice-Presidents) is surveying the current draft sessions for the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting in 2026. Some of you may have already received a request for this survey through your section’s three officers, but we are asking you again. Please send your responses using the following form:
https://bit.ly/3yHH978

Anyone can complete the form. Some items on the form must be answered, but others can be left unanswered. Due to the forthcoming consultation with the AGU on this matter, it would be helpful if you could complete the form as soon as possible.

Assessing and projecting surface air temperature conditions required to sustain permafrost in Japan.
In addition to the permafrost areas already known in Japan, this study points out the possible existence of permafrost in nine areas, including the Daisetsuzan Mountains. Further, the study examines whether permafrost in these areas will be maintained based on climate change projection data. The study is advancing climate change impact assessment from a unique perspective, which is an important contribution to a comprehensive understanding of the actual state of environmental change.

Paleotsunami history of Hachinohe, northern Japan: a multiproxy analysis and numerical modeling approach.
This study unveiled the history of the paleo-tsunami of Hachinohe in northern Tohoku. Using a combination of sedimentological, geochemical, paleontological, and mineralogical proxies, we characterized seven sand layers dated from ca. 2700 to ca. 5500 yr BP based on radiocarbon (14C) ages as event deposits of marine origin. Based on 14C dating, the mean frequency of recurrence of tsunamis is estimated as 384 years (320–450 yr, 95% confidence interval) and a coefficient of variation of 0.78 (0.68–0.99, 95% confidence interval). These indicate the importance of Hachinohe as a tsunami record site for the activity of both trenches.
