#8. Information from PEPS

(1) Featured Articles
We will introduce the featured articles selected by the editor-in-chief
from the papers published in the past every month.

@Takahiko Inoue et al.: New findings on submerged patch reefs and
reefal carbonate rocks at water depths of 70-100 m on the insular
shelf off Miyako-jima, southern Ryukyus, Japan.

Sub-bottom profiling (SBP) surveys and bathymetric mapping conducted
off the shore of Miyako-jima, have revealed the presence of mound-shaped
structures which may be interpreted as submerged reefs and reefal
sediments. The data have a potential to provide effective indicators
of coral reef paleoenvironment development and the tectonic setting
of this offshore area.

@Akihiko Hashimoto&Yuki Nakano: Bubbles to Chondrites-II. Chemical
fractionations in chondrites.

Based on the results of new experiments on the heating boiling and
recondensation of silicates and the analysis of their physicochemical
elementary processes, this study proposes a new model that rationally
explains the chemical fractionation among chondrites by the lightning
heating of precursor dust masses and the aerodynamic concentration of
solid matter that forms planetesimals in giant vortices in the
proto-solar system disk.

@Tetsuya Takemi et al.: Benefits of high-resolution downscaling
experiments for assessing strong wind hazard at local scales in
complex terrain: a case study of Typhoon Songda (2004).
Downscaling simulations are performed for the passage of Typhoon
Songda in 2004 across Japan with horizontal resolutions of 1km and
200m. The different resolutions are compared with a main focus on the
impact of representing complex terrain on reproducing the surface
wind.
