2024 Japan Geoscience Union Scientific Award “Miyake Prize”

The Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) is now accepting nominations of candidates for the recipient of Japan Geoscience Union Scientific Award “Miyake Prize”. JpGU has established the Miyake Prize to honor researchers who have proven an exceptional level of research in the broad field of Materials Sciences related to Geoscience using a new approach, attaining international recognition. The prize is named after Prof. Yasuo Miyake who provided a proposal and a donation for support.

1.Recipient Qualifications

This prize is conferred upon researchers who have provided an exceptional level of research in the broad field of Materials Sciences related to Geoscience using a new approach, attaining international recognition.

3. Recommendations

  1. Candidates must be recommended to be considered for selection, and we will recognize recommendations from the candidate him or herself, as well as those from others. If the candidate is recommended by someone else, the recommender should be a JpGU member. The candidate’s interest in receiving the award will need to be confirmed in advance.
  2. The following documentation is required for a recommendation. Recommendations must be written in Japanese or English. (Both languages can appear in the same recommendation document.)
    • The candidate’s name and contact information (affiliated institution, address, telephone number, email address, etc.)
    • The candidate’s work history and list of honors
    • A list of all reviewed publications and a supplement of the five most important
    • Reasons for recommendation (4 pages or fewer, A4 size)
      If the candidate is providing the recommendation, they must also send two letters of recommendation, and if providing a recommendation for another, they must also provide letters of support from two others. It does not matter whether who make support letters have JpGU membership or not.
    • If providing a recommendation for another, the person providing the recommendation must provide their contact information (address, telephone number, email address, etc.)
    • The confirmation of the ethical compliance by the recommended person

      *Please handwrite the signature the name field on the confirmation form.
      *The names of the Fellow recipients’ nominator and support letter writers will be made public.
  3. Recommendations must be sent within the recommendation period for the year in question in the form of a PDF version thereof, in an email addressed to the Office for the Miyake Prize ( miyakeprize_office[at]jpgu.org ). Supplemental publications can be provided only in PDF format.

4.Selection Committee

Selection committee for Miyake Prize shall be appointed by the President after deliberations by the Board of Directors. The names of committee members shall be published after the name of recipient is announced.

5.Method of Conferral

An award certificate and a medal shall be conferred at the ceremony.

6. Acceptance Period for Nominations

Noon on December 1st Friday to Noon on December 10th Sunday, 2023 (JST)

The number of awards has increased since FY2024. We would like to set a submission period to prevent errors in document submission and confirmation.
