Public Announcement of the 2017 JpGU Representative Election

The term of office of those who were elected in the 2015 JpGU
Representative Election is due to expire on March 31st, 2018.
JpGU will hold the 2017 JpGU Representative Election to choose new
representatives to replace them.
Voting will take place between October 2nd and November 1st 2017.
Anyone who wishes either to vote or to stand as a candidate in the
Representative Election must be a JpGU member as of 5pm Japan time
on 20th July 2017.

==2017 JpGU Representative Election Rules and Procedures==

1.Voters
Anyone who is a fully paid up JpGU member as of 5pm Japan time on
20th July 2017 is eligible to vote. Each electoral zone will choose
a fixed number of representatives. Voters can cast votes for one or
more candidates in their electoral zone, the maximum number of votes
per voter being half of the number of representatives to be chosen
for their electoral zone.

2.Candidates
Anyone who is a fully paid up JpGU member as of 5pm Japan time on
20th July 2017 is eligible to be a candidate in the representative
election.

3.Term
Those who are elected will serve a two year term starting from April
1st 2018.

4.Standing as a candidate
JpGU members may put themselves forward as candidates and they may
also recommend other members who they think would make good
candidates. Members who recommend others for candidacy must obtain
consent from their proposed candidate before submitting their
recommendation. Both submitting oneself as a candidate and
recommending others is done online using the JpGU Member’s Site.

5.Deadline for Submission of Candidacy
Those who wish to be a candidate or to recommend others as candidates
must submit the relevant online form by 5pm Japan time on September
11th 2017.

6.Number of Representatives to be Elected
The total number of representatives is fixed at 150.
5 representatives are automatically assigned to each of the six
electoral zones (for a total of 30 representatives).
The remaining 120 representatives are assigned to the electoral
zones in direct proportion to the number of regular JpGU members in
each zone as of July 31st 2017.

For the 2017 JpGU Representative Election the number of
representatives for each electoral zone is shown below.

Space and Planetary Sciences: 23
Atmospheric and Hydrospheric Sciences: 30
Human Geosciences: 18
Solid Earth Sciences: 50
Biogeosciences: 13
General Geoscience: 16
Total: 150

7.Schedule
Official announcement of Representative Election:
Tuesday August 1st 2017

Period for declaration of candidacy starts:
9am on Thursday August 10th 2017

Period for declaration of candidacy ends:
5pm on Monday September 11th 2017

Voting starts: 9am on Monday October 2nd 2017

Voting ends: 5pm on Wednesday November 1st 2017

Announcement of results: Monday November 6th 2017

8.How to vote
Each regular member can vote for up to half of the number of
representatives to be chosen for their electoral zone (rounded up
if the number of representatives is a odd number)
Votes are cast online using the JpGU Membership System.
