1. Message asking for announcement and recommendation of candidacy for

representative election

Deadline of
announcing your candidacy for the representative election is
closed on September 15, 2011. 

Representatives


 pass resolutions regarding executive official elections,
confirmation of project master plans and other operation policies
together with society
members at ordinary and extraordinary general staff meetings.

Please be active to announce your candidacy or recommend
someone.

Q: Is it necessary to have a status for
the fixed position?



A: No.  It’s the only one condition to be a member of
Japan Geoscience Union.

Q: What will you do if the number of candidates is less than
quorum?

A: In that case, we don’t conduct the representative
election, and all candidates automatically become
representatives.

By-election is to be held according to the Detailed
Regulations of Representative election, Article 6-3.

It says The number of representatives
doesn’t exceed the fixed number, election is not conducted
and candidates become successful automatically. When the
number of representatives doesn’t reach the fixed number,
by-election is called.

Q: What is the necessary number of votes for the election to
be enacted?

A: There’s no rule.  But please be active to vote. 
If some candidates capture the same number of votes, the
younger candidate is elected, according to Detailed
Regulations of Representative election, Article 6.

Q: Representative election is conducted according each
section.

Can I see the list of members of each section?

A: Now, we don’t have such kind of system.

But if you can obtain agreement whom you want to recommend,
you can freely recommend him or her to his or her preferable
session.

Announcement of Representative election of Japan Geoscience
Union

Terms of
representatives of Japan Geoscience Union expires on March
31, 2012, and the 2nd representative election was announced
on August 3.
 


Representatives become executive board members, and can be
section presidents ofJapan Geoscience Union.



They pass resolutions regarding executive official
elections, confirmation of project master plans and other
operation policies together with society members at ordinary
and extraordinary general staff meetings.

◆Representative election procesure◆


1.Voters


Members who have finished membership subscription by October 28, 2011
are eligible to vote.
Members can cast votes for at most 5 representatives in their electoral
zone.

 


2. Candidates


Members who have finished membership subscription by August 14, 2011 can
be a candidate of


the
representative.

 


3. Term


The term is 2 years starting from April 1 in 2012.
 


4. How to be a candidate


To stand as a candidate, at least one recommendation by JpGU members is
necessary.


To recommend someone, the consent by the candidate is necessary.
 


5. H

to announce your candidacy


Please fill in the necessary form in the membership subscription page

by September 15, 2011.

 


6.Number of representatives

The number of representatives is defined to double the number of society
members on the day before the official public announcement,

August
2, 2011.The number of representatives is from 80 to 200.
After the election, 30 representatives are to be divided into six
electoral zones, each at least
with five representatives. The rest of them are to be prorated into six
electoral zones according
to the number of
regular members on the day before the official pubic announcement or
August 2, 2011.




Number of the representatives of each electoral zone is shown below.
  Space and planetary sciences: 15
  Atmospheric, Ocean, and Environmental Sciences: 18
  Human Geosciences: 13
  Solid Earth Sciences: 29
  Biogeosciences: 9
  Education and outreach: 12
  Total: 96


7.Schedule
August 3, Wednesday, 2011 Official public announcement of Representative
election
August 15, Monday, 2011 Declaration of candidacy starts
September 15, Thursday, 2011 Declaration of candidacy finishes
September 29, Thursday, 2011 Casting ballots starts
October 28, Friday, 2011 Casting ballot finishes
November 4, Friday, 2011 Ballot counting and reporting the result

8.How to vote
Each regular member can vote for up to five candidates of his/her electoral
zone.
Elected representatives or staff, together with society members, are to
elect board members, confirm project programs and resolve various
matters,
concerning the management of this union in the regular or extraordinary general meetings of members.
General meeting of members is the supreme decision-making body of this
union.
