About JpGU-AGU 2026
Greetings
JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026 Chair
Tomochika TOKUNAGA (The University of Tokyo/President, Japan Society of Engineering Geology)
The 2026 Annual Meeting of the Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) will be held as a joint meeting with the American Geophysical Union (AGU) for six days from May 24 to 29, 2026, in Makuhari, Chiba City. This conference brings together researchers, engineers, educators, science communicators, students from all fields of Earth and planetary sciences and related disciplines worldwide together with the interested public members. It serves as a forum for sharing research findings from fundamental Earth and planetary science studies to research addressing global environmental issues and the relationship between human society and Earth and planetary sciences, and for fostering dialogue toward multidisciplinary collaboration. Previous JpGU-AGU joint meetings were held in 2017 and 2020. These conferences served as platforms to strengthen collaboration between participants from around the world and those conducting research primarily in Japan, while also providing excellent opportunities to initiate new collaboration. To build a future where human society can be sustainable, and where future generations can thrive in an environment richer than ever before, we must not only deepen our research but also foster mutual understanding, share challenges, and construct a vision for the future through intensive communication with local communities and citizens. We hope the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting will provide new insights, contribute to the further advancement of Earth and planetary sciences and related fields, and offer an invaluable opportunity for learning and growth for all participants. We look forward to your active participation in the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026.

The JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026, to be held at the Makuhari Messe in Chiba Prefecture, Japan, comes after a longer interval than usual due to the pandemic. We are now fully prepared to welcome you to Japan with renewed enthusiasm and strength.
With the call for sessions opening on September 17, 2025, we are excited about the opportunities this Joint Meeting will provide. The challenges we face in the scientific world are more pressing than ever, making this meeting especially significant for Earth scientists to come together and address the urgent needs of our time.
The Joint Meeting 2026 will feature unique Plenary Lectures, showcasing not only the scientific progress achieved over the past decade but also highlighting the societal and humanitarian imperatives that arise in a rapidly changing world of science and technology.
We invite you to propose sessions that spark such discussions, advance our science, and communicate clearly to society where we stand. Please note that the maximum number of conveners has been increased to six, providing greater flexibility to incorporate diversity of career stage (from students to late career), gender, geography, and scientific discipline in selecting co-conveners. In particular, we encourage students and early- to mid-career scientists to develop innovative and “out-of-the-box” proposals.
We hope that the new scientific knowledge and discoveries presented at the Joint Meeting will contribute to solving the challenges before us. Let us move forward together under the theme of the JpGU-AGU Joint Meeting 2026: “Transformative Science for Life & Earth.”
We look forward to welcoming you to Makuhari next May.
