Greetings from the Presidents

Message from the JpGU President

Simon Wallis (President of JpGU)
Our previous joint meetings in 2017 and 2020 successfully brought scientists together from around the world—strengthening our global geoscience networks. We’re excited to build on these achievements and take the next step forward. The upcoming meeting in 2026 is a fully joint JpGU-AGU event meaning that all sessions whether or not they include AGU members as conveners are jointly organized by both societies. To ensure inclusive dialogue, English will be the principal language for presentations. However, there is no language policing and we will also make provisions for some presentations to be held in Japanese as needed.

Our 2026 theme—Transformative Science for Life & Earth—reflects the urgent need to connect deep scientific enquiry with planetary stewardship, and to reimagine how science and society can work together. This meeting certainly has the goal of advancing geoscience at its core, but it’s also about making connections, shaping the future, and experiencing the joy of sharing your science beyond your own field.

Let’s make JpGU–AGU 2026 a meeting that truly inspires transformation.

Message from AGU President

Brandon Jones (President of AGU)
One of geosciences' most powerful insights is that Earth is an interconnected system—air, water, land, and life are linked by flows of energy and matter. The same can be said of today’s global scientific enterprise: We are more interconnected than ever, and advances in both discovery and solution science depend on strong, cross-border and interdisciplinary collaboration.
Our joint meeting 2026, with the theme "Transformative Science for Life & Earth", is designed to put those principles into practice. Scientists from across the Pacific and around the world will be able to share data, methods, and lessons on everything from earthquakes and tsunamis to weather extremes and climate change. It will build pathways for students and early-career scientists, ensuring that rising talent circulates along with ideas. If we are bold, it will ignite enduring partnerships that advance geoscience and deliver real-world benefits for people and the planet. JpGU–AGU Joint Meeting 2026 can be the catalyst for sustained, global geoscience collaboration.
