・主な業績 Major achievements (in Japanese)
安成哲三氏は，アジアモンスーンに約４０日周期の季節内変動があることを発見し，その変動が熱帯気象にはたす役割を解明した．モンスーンの年々変動が赤道太平洋でのエルニーニョ・南方振動（ＥＮＳＯ）に能動的に作用することを明らかにしＥＮＳＯがモンスーン変動に影響しているという従来の視方を覆した．ユーラシア大陸の積雪変動がアジアモンスーン変動に与える影響や植生が気候形成に果たす能動的役割についても，従来の説を大きく覆す研究結果を出した．これらの仮設の検証も含めて，アジアモンスーン域のエネルギー・水循環に関する国際的観測計画ＧＡＭＥを立ち上げ，大きな成果を上げた．
