・主な業績 Major achievements (in Japanese)
杉村新氏の研究上の貢献は地球物理学、地震学、地質学、第四紀学、火山学など幅広い分野にわたる。杉村氏はこれまでに共著を含めて234編の学術論文、21編の著書を出版し、地学教育や科学史などに関する106編の文章を公表してきた。2003年には国際第四紀研究連合の名誉会員に推挙され、2009年には日本活断層学会賞を受賞した。「地質図の書き方と読み方」、「弧状列島」、「大地の動きをさぐる」、「Island Arcs: Japan and its environs」、「グローバルテクトニクス：地球変動学」など氏が執筆された教科書は広く読まれている。杉村新氏は日本の地球科学を長く先導し、特に新生代の構造運動の解明に貢献するとともに、プレートテクトニクス理論の重要性を早くから理解し、日本列島の新生代の地震・火山活動と構造運動をプレートの動きと関連づけて研究した。そして、その成果を多くの教科書や解説論文として発表し、国内・国外の学生や若手研究者に大きな教育効果を与えた。
