・主な業績 Major achievements (in Japanese)
岡部氏は地理空間の統計的分析に関する多数の学術論文や書籍を発表してこられた。この分野の旗艦学術誌であるGeographical Analysisの2012年版に掲載された研究者の貢献度リストにおいて、岡部氏は1989 年から1998 年の10 年間の論文業績が世界の第5 位、40 年間の期間では第15 位にランクされている。また、岡部氏が筆頭著者の書籍Spatial Tessellations は、四千件以上の引用を誇る名著である。岡部氏は東京大学において、空間情報科学研究センターの設立に尽力し、初代のセンター長を務められた。日本学術会議では、20〜21 期の会員を務め、第3 部の地球人間圏分科会と、第1 部の地域情報分科会の委員長を務められた。また、地理情報システム学会の設立に尽力し、会長、副会長を務めた。さらに地球惑星科学連合においては地球人間圏セクションの初代セクションプレジデントを務められた。
