・主な業績 Major achievements (in Japanese)
岡田尚武氏は，新生代における石灰質ナノ化石層序の国際基準となるCP-CN化石帯を提案し，この成果を基に，国際深海掘削計画などの多くの海洋コアの年代決定に活躍された．また，石灰質ナノ化石を用いることにより，従来年代未詳とされてきた日本の白亜系.古第三系の地層群の年代も次々に明らかにした．その結果，日本列島の層序対比に大きな進展をもたらし，日本の白亜紀.古第三紀テクトニクスの研究の発展に重要な役割を果たされた．また，同氏は世界に先駆けて，現生円石藻類の大西洋および太平洋における地理分布と鉛直分布や季節変動を詳細に解明した．これらの結果は，円石藻を用いた古海洋学的研究の基礎となっており，国際的に高く評価されている．また，これまで行われた各国際深海掘削計画（DSDP, ODP, IODP）に関する重要な国際委員を歴任し，日本の古海洋分野の発展に貢献された．
