・主な業績

平原和朗氏は，地震波速度構造の手法開発をはじめ，GPSによる地殻変動の解析や地震サイクルシミュレーションなど，日本の地震学・測地学の発展を牽引してきた。地震波速度構造の解析では，日本列島下に沈み込む太平洋プレートやフィリピン海プレートの描像を捉え，プレート沈み込みのダイナミクスの研究に大きなインパクトを与えた。GPSによる地殻変動解析では，兵庫県南部地震後の余効変動の検出，豊後水道でのスロースリップの発見，跡津川断層のクリープ現象の確認などの成果を挙げた。地震サイクルシミュレーションでは，断層摩擦構成則や粘弾性を考慮した数値モデルを開発し，プレート境界で起こるすべり現象の多様性を解明した。また，日本地震学会会長，アジア地震学会会長，地震予知連絡会会長や内閣府中央防災会議で要職を務め，国内外の地震防災に尽力してきた。これらの功績は，地球惑星科学の発展に卓越した貢献を果たした。
