・主な業績

浦辺徹郎博士は，海底資源および地球化学・地球生物学の研究において多くの先駆的研究を牽引してこられました．特に海底熱水系を対象とした研究では，リッジフラックス計画，アーキアンパーク計画，海底下の大河計画といった大型国際共同研究プロジェクトのリーダーとして，海底熱水系研究の黎明期から現在まで研究の中核を担い，地質学・地球物理学・地球化学・地球生物学を統合して，マントルから生命圏までを視野に入れた熱水循環系の実像を明らかにされました．また，これらの幅広い知識と国際活動の経験を活かし，国連海洋法の大陸棚限界委員会委員や内閣府戦略的イノベーション創造プログラム(SIP)プログラム・ディレクターなどの政府系の要職や，学協会の役職を歴任し，日本の地球惑星科学の発展と海洋開発・資源政策面で社会に対しても多大な貢献をされました．
