・主な業績 Major achievements (in Japanese)
荒木徹氏は、地球の磁気圏・電離圏の研究において数々の業績をあげ、太陽地球系物理学の発展に貢献した。特に、地磁気急始変化（SC）の汎世界的分布とその変動の同時性に関する研究、およびSCに伴う磁場変動を生成する電流系に関する一連の研究は、常に世界をリードし、太陽風動圧が急激に変化した場合の磁気圏応答および地上磁場変動に関する基本的な概念と研究の枠組を完成した。学界運営に関しては、国際科学会議(ICSU)世界資料センター(World Data Center)パネルメンバー、天文地球物理恒久事業連盟(FAGS)/国際地磁気指数サービス(ISGI) のDirecting Board Memberなどを歴任、これらの国際学協会組織においてリーダーシップを発揮した。国内においては日本学術会議地球電磁気学研究連絡委員会委員、情報学研究連絡委員会委員を務め、科学データの保存と公開のためのデータ体制の整備に貢献した。
