・主な業績 Major achievements (in Japanese)
荒井章司教授は、綿密な野外調査と世界一と評される岩石薄片の偏光顕微鏡観察技術を駆使した記載岩石学的手法を武器に、日本および世界各地の造山帯やオフィオライトのマントルかんらん岩、火山岩中のマントル捕獲岩などを用いて、地球のマントル進化の解明を進めてきました。その結果、現在のマントル進化の基礎となるメルトの発生と移動メカニズムによるマントル変化過程、島弧深部火成活動に伴うマントル改変、スピネルの物質科学的特長を利用したマントル進化プロセスの解読と地表に露出したかんらん岩体の形成場推定への応用、およびマントル掘削推進に世界的に大きく貢献されました。
