Introducing logos to visualize diversity in JpGU Sessions

The Japan Geoscience Union (JpGU) respects diversity in all its aspects, including gender, age, origin, nationality, background, physical characteristics, values and beliefs, employment status, work style, and family structure. Our goal is to be an organization where everyone can engage in research and educational activities in a pleasant environment without discrimination based on their position. In this regard, as a first step, we propose to introduce logos to “visualizing” the progress in the promotion of diversity in the session conveners during the JpGU meeting, which is the most important event for us. At the request of the conveners who agree with us, we will display their logos on the session pages.

The composition of the session convener should be
・multiple genders (especially women)
・multiple career stages (e.g., early career researchers*)
・multiple nationalities (foreign researchers)
A gold-based logo will be displayed for sessions that meet three of the above criteria, and a silver-based logo will be displayed for sessions that meet two of above criteria.

*Early career researchers are defined as researchers (with or without tenure) and students up to 7 years after obtaining their degrees. In this case, those who have given birth can add one year per child. (ex. Up to 9 years with two children)

The merits of the proposed logos can be:
・The inclusion of job seekers as session conveners will lead to efficient job matching. Because the session conveners can get more attention from many researchers.
・It will be a good opportunity for human resource development in academic society activities by encouraging students and early career researchers to be involved in session planning.
・The inclusion of female researchers as session conveners will promote gender equality.
・The inclusion of foreign researchers as session conveners will enhance internationalization.
・As a result of the progress in the diversity in the session conveners, new perspectives will be added to research presentations and will advance research exchange and scientific research itself.

We are proposing these logos on a trial basis at the 2021 meeting. In the future, we plan to introduce a logo for individuals, such as early career researchers and students.

Thank you so much for your understanding and cooperation.
