This event explores Japanese landscape and earthquakes through the lens of Ukiyo-e woodblock prints. By contrasting Hiroshige’s iconic ‘famous places’ series —which helped establish a standardized visual understanding of the land—with the namazu-e (catfish prints) born from seismic disasters, we examine how Edo-period society visualized both the stability and impermanence of the Earth. This interdisciplinary discussion highlights Ukiyo-e as both art and a cultural archive of geographical and geological perception.

The Earth's atmosphere is continuous from the lower layers to outer space, with each layer interacting closely with one another. It is also essential to account for global atmospheric circulation, spanning from the equator to the poles. To understand these complex atmospheric phenomena, a comprehensive analysis of cross-regional data is required. In this lesson, we will demonstrate and practice how to visualize and analyze diverse upper-atmospheric data using a single integrated analysis tool.

The ECR Kickoff Mixer is a networking event held on the evening of the first day of the meeting, primarily aimed at Early Career Researchers (ECRs) such as graduate students and postdoctoral researchers. By providing a casual setting for interaction, the event seeks to foster connections among young researchers across disciplines and nationalities, encouraging discussions and potential research collaborations throughout the meeting. For participants from overseas, it is intended to serve as a first point of contact with the JpGU community, while for domestic early career researchers it offers one of the most accessible opportunities for international exchange.

Geo T-Shirt Studio is an initiative led by graduate students and early-career researchers in the geoscience community. Its aim is to promote interaction and networking across different research fields and institutions while also creating opportunities for young researchers to actively engage in outreach activities. By leveraging the creativity and design sense characteristic of younger generations, the project seeks to produce and sell original goods that clearly and attractively communicate the fascination and significance of geoscience to general visitors. Through this effort, we aim to create a new form of outreach that connects academic research with society. In particular, the initiative strives to make geoscience feel more accessible and approachable to the general public—including high school students—and to provide opportunities that spark curiosity and interest in Earth science in everyday life.

Into the Core – Live at JpGU–AGU 2026 is a live-recorded special edition of the interview series Into the Core, organized by the International Continental Scientific Drilling Program (ICDP), to be held at the JpGU–AGU Joint Meeting 2026. Into the Core is an official ICDP interview series that introduces researchers involved in continental scientific drilling. Through interviews with leading scientists, the series explores the background of their research, the process of initiating drilling projects, their experiences in the field, and their personal perspectives on science. The interviews are normally recorded, edited, and released online, making them accessible to researchers and students worldwide. In this special edition, the interviews will be conducted as a live recording session at the conference venue, allowing participants to attend the conversation in person. Through dialogue with scientists who have led ICDP projects, this event aims to promote intergenerational exchange within the research community while showcasing the significance and excitement of scientific drilling to conference participants and the broader public.
