| Scope |
Problem-solving and transdisciplinary (TD) education, which aims to cultivate individuals capable of contributing to the resolution of societal challenges, has been increasingly recognized as a key framework for addressing complex global issues such as sustainability, climate change, disaster risk, and human well-being. Owing to its integrative and holistic nature, Earth and planetary sciences provide one of the richest foundations for developing and expanding TD education by bridging natural phenomena and social systems. This session focuses on exploring the theoretical and practical dimensions of TD education through themes related to Earth sciences. By connecting natural sciences, social sciences, the arts, and community-based practices, it seeks to examine how universities and research institutions can cultivate the next generation of "knowledge co-creators". Particular attention will be given to educational models that link scientific knowledge with social practice through collaboration with local communities and natural environments. Key discussion themes include: - Theoretical frameworks and educational design of TD programs using Earth system changes (climate, water, ecosystems, and geology) as learning contexts - Educational models integrating geoscience with social challenges such as disaster resilience, environmental restoration, and resource circulation - Practice and evaluation of cross-disciplinary education for comprehensive solutions to social issues - International collaboration and competency development in doctoral and lifelong learning programs - Development of assessment and visualization methods for TD competencies grounded in Earth sciences This session provides a forum where educators, researchers, and community practitioners can cross disciplinary boundaries to co-design a new learning paradigm that links Earth sciences with society. Case studies and practical reports related to these themes are also welcome. |
