Scope
At the 2015 United Nations Sustainable Development Summit, "14 Protect the richness of the oceans and seas" was put forward as one of the SDGs, with the goal of protecting
the marine environment.
Plastic pollution caused by plastics produced and discarded daily in the marine environment reaches even the most remote areas from land, and it is feared that it will not only
take the lives of marine life but also deal a major blow to communities that depend on
fishing and tourism. However, there is still insufficient scientific knowledge about the fate of plastic waste that leaks from daily life. Plastic waste flows from rivers into the sea, and then the fine fragments (microplastics) that are broken down spreads in oceans and
atmosphere. The fate of these missing plastics is a response problem of the geoscience
system, including the ecosystem, to the release of the pollutant plastic, and is one of the
important themes that JpGU must address. Environmental destruction caused by marine plastic pollution may bring about major disasters to the creatures on earth in the near
future. As part of environmental and disaster prevention education, it is necessary to
learn about marine plastic pollution, gather many wisdoms, and discuss
countermeasures.
