SDGsの17の目標のなかで世界中で最も取り組みが遅れているのがNo.14「海洋」である。国連では2021年から2030年を「国連海洋科学の１０年」とし、加盟各国に加速して「海洋」の諸課題の推進を進めるよう要請した。No.14の挑戦の中で「海洋リテラシー向上」がある。海洋学の様々な知識を一般社会への還元は重要な活動である。海洋の知識習得、人材育成など、多様なやり方で一般社会へ海洋科学を浸透させていくアプローチがある。このセッションでは、アカデミアやNGOなど各組織で行われている市民に海洋学の魅力を知ってもらうための活動を紹介する。発表の後に、パネルディスカッションとして、登壇者と会場に集まった人々（特に小、中、高校の教員などの参加を期待）とのインターラクションの時間を設け、科学を伝えるより良い手法・方法論などについて議論する。

Of the 17 SDGs, the world is lagging behind the world's efforts the most in No. 14, "Life under the Waters. Therefore, the United Nations has designated the period from 2021 to 2030 as the "United Nations Decade of Ocean Sciences. Among the challenges of No. 14, "improving ocean literacy is one of the most essencial challenges. Giving back various oceanographic knowledge to the general public is an essencial activity to be crucial awareness of the ocean literacy of the general public. There are diverse approaches to improving ocean literacy, such as ocean knowledge acquisition, human resource development, education, and promotion of science that involves the public, that can be used to disseminate ocean science to the general public in a variety of ways. In this session, therefore, speakers from academia as well as NGOs and other diverse organizations will introduce a variety of activities being undertaken by their organizations to make the public aware of the appeal of ocean science from a variety of perspectives. After the presentations, in addition to taking questions from the audience, a panel discussion will be held to allow time for interaction between the speakers and the audience (especially elementary, middle, and high school teachers) to discuss better methods and methodologies for communicating science and to learn from each other's good points. This session will be an valuable opportunity to learn from each other.
