Quantum computing is a rapidly emerging technology that is expected to solve complex problems far beyond the current generation of classical computers. While the technology, especially the hardware part, is progressing well, the software part, particularly model codes for solving problems in earth sciences, needs a lot of effort to generate viable applications in the field. Hence, there is a need to start discussions on the present state of computational sciences used in earth sciences and the potential use of quantum computing.
This kind of research and development relies heavily on the availability of a strong curriculum in university education. At the moment, there are not many institutes and universities all over the world providing any systematic education in quantum computing in any field of research, let alone research in earth sciences. This needs to be discussed further to prepare a quantum computer-savvy younger generation that will form the backbone for developing computing systems to solve the complex issues of extreme events and natural disasters.
Under this scenario, this session seeks reports of studies in earth sciences related to quantum computing and will foster discussions on quantum computing education in universities and institutions related to earth sciences. |
