| Scope |
The subduction of the Pacific and Panthalassa plates since at least the Mesozoic has profoundly shaped the tectonic architecture of East Asia. Longterm processes such as continental accretion, mountain building, mantle flow reorganization, and marginal sea opening are fundamental to understanding interactions between lithosphere and asthenospheric mantle, plate boundary dynamics, and the growth and recycling of continental crust. Recent advances in plate reconstruction, seismic tomography, geochronology, and geochemistry have revealed complex histories of subducted oceanic plates, including the Izanagi, Phoenix, and Kula plates that once existed within the Panthalassa Ocean. To fully understand the tectonic evolution of Northeast Asia as part of the circum Pacific realm, it is essential to consider the Panthalassa plate reconstruction models. East Asia's rich geological record provides a unique archive for testing these global reconstructions and for linking deep mantle dynamics with surface tectonic features. This session invites multidisciplinary contributions that investigate the tectonic evolution of East Asia and the subduction history of the Pacific and Panthalassa domains. We welcome studies based on field geology, geophysics, geochemistry, geochronology, paleomagnetism, and geodynamic modeling, including both numerical and analogue approaches. Comparative research from analogous systems, such as the Andes, the North American Cordillera, and the Southwest Pacific, is also encouraged to identify shared and contrasting geodynamic processes. By integrating surface and deep Earth datasets, this session aims to advance our understanding of subduction driven orogenesis, arc magmatism, slab dynamics, and continental evolution in East Asia. |
